Welcome!

This is my teaching resource page. As I have created and accumulated several tutorials, articles and materials over time, I decided to collect and publish them here via this wiki and plan to contribute from time to time. I have taught several courses and given workshops on 3D documentation and reconstruction and other topics at various universities. Each chapter is designed to represent either a course I have given or a specific tutorial on certain topics. Some of them have videos, most of them have text and images.

🧑‍🏫 3D Reconstruction in Archaeology

In one of my regular seminars I teach how to model in 3D and how to approach archaeological architectural reconstruction. The seminar uses the commercial software Cinema 4D, but the basic methods of modelling, texturing, lighting and rendering can be applied later in different software. The theoretical approach to architectural reconstruction will also be discussed. Finally, we will learn how to create our own reconstructions and export them to Virtual Reality using the Unity!

🧑‍🏫 Archaeological Redrawing of Plans

This basic course in Archaeoinformatics teaches the use of AutoCAD for Archaeology. Here we learn how to do a complete redraw of a hand drawn excavation trench. The digitisation of archaeological plans is a large part of an archaeologist's work. We will learn how to set up a drawing at the correct scale, how to correctly import a scan of a hand-drawn excavation plan, and finally how to use layers to redraw and prepare the final printout. -> Go to the lessons!

🧑‍💻 Reflectance Transformation Imaging

Here, we will explore the possibilities of Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) for Archaeology. With RTI we can make things visible that are invisible to the naked eye by calculating the topography of the photographed object. We will learn how this technology works and how to use it correctly. We will discuss what software and hardware to use and the possibilities of publishing RTI images online. As this technology is still developing, we will also look at different ways of creating RTIs. -> Go to the lessons!

🧑‍💻 Structure from Motion

This lesson covers the basics of Structure from Motion in both theory and practice. We will learn how the technique works and what to consider when taking photographs for a project. We will learn how to process the photographs to make them suitable for SfM. Finally, we will learn how to use the popular Agisoft Metashape software to convert our photos into a properly textured 3D object. Finally, we will look at some alternatives to Metashape. -> Go to the lessons!

🧑‍💻 Geographic information systems (GIS)

Here I have collected a number of stand-alone tutorials that are useful when working with GIS. Geographic information systems are an integral part of digital and computational archaeology, and even if you are more focused on 3D, you will need to work with GIS from time to time. These tutorials solve specific problems and will increase in number over time. I will focus on QGIS as it is a free GIS software, available on multiple platforms and therefore suitable for everyone. -> Go to the lessons!

🧑‍💻 Archaeogaming (coming soon)

Archaeogaming is the bridge between archaeology and videogames. There are many ways to "do" archaeogaming and in this collection I want to write about some of them. In my course, students work on their own games, and this collection offers some tutorials on how to go about creating your own games using various tools. It also provides an introduction to archaeogaming and how we as archaeologists need to be aware of our responsibilities. -> Go to the lessons (coming soon)!

📹 Additional and Shared Resources

This section will consist of additional resources that are important for studying, such as how to organise online classes or how to set up and use citation managers. It will be a collection of third party online videos and other tutorials that I have found on the web or made myself. If you have any suggestions for additions to this section, perhaps a video that has helped you learn or organise, let me know and I'll add it to the list. Any free resource is welcome on this page. -> Go to the lessons!
